The Grottes de Lacave

The Grottes de Lacave are open from 1 March to 11 November. They are closed for lunch.

The Grottes de Lacave are a mere 5 miles from Rocamadour. There are 12 chambers, each incredibly beautiful. The access to the caves is via an electric train. There is a large underground lake and a famous unlit chamber where ultraviolet light is shone to expose the wet tips of growing stalactites. The visit takes 1 1/4 hours.

These are perhaps the most "touristy" of the caves in the area, not because of the number of visitors - that honour has to go to Padirac - but because of the clever use of lighting of the chambers which make this natural phenomenon more into a display. This may not be to everyone's liking...

As with all caves, the temperature inside remains constant and is chilly.

Try to avoid the post-lunchtime rush.
